Thursday, July 14, 2011 Strasbourg France

Thursday, July 14 We are now back in Strausbourg  for 2 days after a 2 day trip on the Wine Route in the Alsace Wine Region. This area is French,German and Swiss since it is very close to all these countries and have gone back and forth between France and Germany ruling it several times. Today is a holiday in France - Bastille Day, celebrated much like our 4th of July. Bastille Day, or as it is officially La FĂȘte Nationale (The National Celebration) and commonly le quatorze juillet (the fourteenth of July).  It commemorates the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789 and is one of the strongest symbols of French culture.

Room had a king bed             The bathroom was ALL-IN-ONE, no shower stall just a curtain.

Not a lot of stores open so this may be a sort of rest day for us. To explore Strasbourg in a fun way we took a boat trip on the river Ill, a major tributary of the Rhine. Along the waterway we went through locks, saw the legendary sites in Strasbourg, both ancient and modern, the half-timbered houses of the Petite France quarter (the old quarter of Strasbourg), the Ponts Couverts ("covered bridges"), the Vauban barrage, the European institutions (European Council, Court of Human Rights, European Parliament).

DSC01157  Beautiful gold on this pipe organ.

I saw this bakery as we were going back to the hotel.  Upside down muffins. I don’t know what they are but at 4.35 Euros ($6.25 USD) and 7.30 Euros ($10.50 USD) they must be good.

They had fireworks for Bastille Day.  We thought we were on a quite street but some people continued partying late and a few fire crackers were heard throughout the night.  In the morning, we were awaken by the garbage trucks crushing all the trash.  Not a quite street as we thought.  It was only that one night that was loud.  The hotel was clean and it very convenient to the the tram system.
