After our long day in Le Havre visiting Omaha Beach, we welcomed the stop in the small city of Weymouth. We did not expect much other than the opportunity to use the free Wi-Fi and avoid the $.40/minute charge of the ship. But, we were delighted by the town. After publishing several days travel info, we toured the town and were pleasantly surprised.
Boats awaiting the opening of the draw bridge.
Draw bridge across the river leading to the older part of town and the area with the nice beach.
Typical small narrow street in England.
Weymouth is where the “Punch & Judy” puppet shows were created. Below, photos of the beach front. It is a very proper sandy beach which is nice after the many pebble beaches we found in England.
Below, the city had a competition for deck chair designs and chose the winners to make the deck chair canvas.
Some creative giant sunglasses on this deck chair.
View of the businesses along the beach front.
A very active beach front on this warm sunny day. It is the last holiday before school starts so everyone was out to the beach.
Above, Elaine’s favorite sign, “Life is short, break the rules!”
More creative Punch & Judy puppets.
Draw bridge open for the boats to come in from the ocean.
Above and below, photos of our ship in the distance.
The sailing competitions were held in Weymouth during the London Olympics. Above right is the housing built for Olympic judges, referees and line callers.
Portland Port is an old Naval Base that has been abandoned by the British Navy. Closed pubs line the street across from the entrance to the old naval base.
Edward and Elaine on formal night aboard the ship. Since we have been traveling for five months, this is as formal as it gets.
