January
28, 2017 – Ushuaia , Argentina
Wake-up
call at 4:30am and we actually made it! Very excited to see the glaciers
because we have never taken an Alaska
cruise. The glaciers were as follows: Espania 4:35am, Romanche 5:13am, Alemania
5:30am, Francia 5:42am, Italia 5:47am and Hollanda 6:30am. It was still rather
dark when we passed the first, but you could still make it out. The others were
clearly visible all less than 1/4 mile from the ship. The good news is that
they were on our side of the ship so we could see them all up close from our
balcony. Having never actually seen a glacier, we were not disappointed. The
colors in the ice was amazing. Sadly there was a waterfall from the base of one
which meant it was slowly melting. A couple of others you could see where
they had melted back and retreated up the valley they had carved between two
mountains as the reverse from the last ice age. Two of the largest glaciers
still came down to the edge of the water and had shown no evidence of
retreating. It was a spectacular 1 1/2 hour show. By 6:30am we were back in bed
as the ship moved on to Ushuaia.
Sorry for the dark pictures. I don't have the best camera and it was VERY EARLY IN THE MORNING.
