We drove to the Ashton Estate which lies above the mouth of the Avon River near Bristol. On the way we walked across the suspension above the canyon. The suspension bridge crosses the canyon in a way similar to the Royal Gorge Bridge, but not quite as high.
Above, the Avon River at Bristol just before it flows into the Bristol Estuary. Somewhere upstream is Stratford-Upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. Below is a picture and explanation of the amazing variety of plant life growing up the canyon.
Below, the suspension bridge built in 1854 and a view of the canyon from the bridge.
Ashton Court Estate and Park, Bristol, England. One of the many estates that have now been donated to the National Trust because of the cost of maintaining them and the inheritance taxes in England. This estate has more than 3,000 acres.
