June 1, 2013 Backwell, England, Cricket Match, Tyntesfield Castle and Clevedon, England seaside town

We saw a brochure about cricket matches to be played at a club near our apartment. Not knowing anything about the game, I Googled “differences between cricket and baseball” to get some idea. We learned a little bit and proceeded to the match. It was a beautiful day, an interesting experience and we got some  helpful tips from spectators. The game seems very complicated compared to baseball and takes much longer to play.

Below are fields of grape seed behind the cricket field. We had been seeing the fields of what looked like yellow flowers, but we were told by the cricket players that it is grape seed grown for grape seed oil and used as a fuel supplement so it is plentiful in England.

This is Tyntesfield castle, a 19th century Victorian country house and grounds not far from our apartment in Backwell, England. It was a large landholding privately owned until 1992 then given over to the government as a heritage site because the maintenance and taxes could no longer be paid. We are told that the inside is as lavish as Highclere Castle (Downton Abby) so we are looking forward to a visit.

After the Cricket Match we decided to go over to a small seaside town of Clevedon about 10 miles from our apartment.

Lawn Bowling in Clevedon a seaside town. We stopped at this Lawn Bowling Club to see how it is played.  Similar to Bocce Ball except it is on grass much like a putting green.  These guys were very serious players and we enjoyed watching the game.

You can see the country of Wales across the estuary and a Victorian pier extending into the sea.

Note the mudflats below. The tidal change at this seaside town is 47 feet. We are obviously at low tide at this point.
