Barnett’s Adventure Begins

Thursday, May 5, 2011
Began our driving by going to New Orleans.  Departed home at 10:45 and spent the night in a little boutique type hotel, Parc St. Charles located on St. Charles and Poydras Street. I was a little concern being on the 2nd floor with the trolley going right outside our windows but no problem.  Read about a famous New Orleans drink the "Sazarac".  This is some poweful stuff!  Needless to say we didn't have more than one of these.

2 ounces rye whiskey
Absinthe (or Herbsaint/Pernod) (
90-148 proof!!!)

2 dashes Peychaud’s bitters
1 teaspoon bar sugar or simple syrup
Twist of lemon

Drove from New Orleans to Petal, MS (outside of Haittisburg, MS) to visit Edward's brother, Robert and Pam and Anthony.  Robert works at Amtrak and the depot was recently remodeled.  Very nice remodel to keep the old look.  We had a late lunch at Tokyo Hibachi grill.  Anthony found the cooks interesting.  Robert took is on a tour and then we headed to Tupelo, MS, birthplace of Elvis Presley.  Left Hattiesburg and drove to Tupelo. MS. Got there about dark and checked in the hotel and called it a night.

Toured the Elvis Presley house, birthplace and museum then went to a festival on the town square.  Stopped in at a department store that had been there for a long time.  They had some paintings that I liked and one of the salesmen told me that the guy that painted them was an employee that had been there for 26 years.  We went over and talked with him and he told us some stories about the paintings.  He gave me a signed copy of one and also told us about another 3-D type sculpture on the outside wall a few blocks away.  We went by to see it and it was really interesting to see.  Stopped in at the old Hardware store and Elvis' Jr. High School.

We are now driving on the Natchez Trace Parkway.  website:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natchez_Trace
It runs from Natchez, MS to Nashville, TN.  Although we picked it up at Tupelo, MS.  We saw some trees all twisted and broken up from a tornado.  We also saw and an actual WILD TURKEY (gobble, gobble, gobble) roaming around next to the road and also saw several deer.  The Parkway is only 2 lanes, no billboards, service stations or restaurants.  There are only a few places to stop on this road - picnic areas, some with restrooms and parking areas for hiking trails.  If you need something like gas or food you have limited exits to get off and may have to drive a few miles off after that to find gasoline, restaurants, etc.  We also saw the TenTom Waterway, a canal from the Tennessee River and some of the huge locks the boats and barges have to pass through.  It is a beautiful drive with no commercial vehicles and very few cars.
Made it to Nashville, TN and got checked in at the Residence Inn and then went down to the “Honky Tonk” area on Broadway downtown Nashville.  Listened to a few bands, went in Ernest Tubbs Record Shop, etc.

Went to the Country Music Hall of Fame and also took the RCA Studio B tour.  We had a great tour leader.  Toured the old recording studio where Elvis and hundreds of others recorded top hits.

After 4 hours at the Hall of Fame we were getting hungry.  Edward asks a guy about a good fried chicken place.  Recommendation was Loveless Cafe and Motel.

Today we are driving from Nashville, TN to Ashland, KY or somewhere in that area.  Changed our mind.  We are going to drive on to Fort Mill, S.C. a day early.

Got to Fort Mill, SC to visit with log time friends Art and Bobbie Jo Szymanski.  They now live at Sun City Carolinas Dell Webb 55+ community.  It is very nice and Art and BJ have a house on the 11th hole of the golf course.

Tues, May 10, 2011
They have a great view from the middle between the tee and the green.  BJ has collected over 600 golf balls in their back yard and even in the front yard.  They have part of their deck screened not just for mosquitoes but golf balls.  It is fun to watch the golfers from the deck but you do have to pay attention when they tee off!!

Had breakfast in Waxhaw, SC near Art and Bobbie Jo’s house.  Tried the "Taylor Ham" and egg sandwich.  Taylor Ham is from NJ.  Not bad.  Said "goodbye" to Art and Bobbie Jo and started driving to Greensboro, NC to meet up with Mark and Carol for lunch about a 2 hour drive.  Met them at the Print Shop Bistro at the Proximity Hotel.  French cuisine.  We had escargot and quiche.  I can say the quiche was really outstanding.  We had a bottle or 2 of Sauvignon Blanc with lunch and a dessert wine that was really nice.  At the restaurant they have smoking out on the patio so Mark and Carol have been moved to the Cigar(ette) patio at the back of the parking lot next to the freeway.  We were sad to leave but had to get on the road to Williamsburg.  We wished them the best and hope to see them for the Boat Parade in December at Ross and Julie's.
